Week 36 Results: +5.2 Not very good...let me explain

I have been working my butt off at the gym all week. Weight training 3 times, hour long cardio sessions and as of Saturday morning weigh in, I was up a lb (it has been up all week). I have no idea why I was up. I have stuck to my 1800 calories completely. I have been chalking it up to just a change in my system due to all the exercise. The weekend was very social, a wedding, nieces confirmation with dinner. I didn't think I did that bad, but obviously I did. I believe the 5 lbs is mostly water and just some strange thing with the exercise. I know it looks really bad considering my previous ups and downs, but other than a blip over the weekend, I am on plan and hitting the gym, big time. In fact I am staring at my packed gym bag as I type.

I am open to any thoughts as to why my weight would be up due to the exercise. Maybe I would have had a big whoosh if I had stayed on plan on Saturday and Sunday. I am really enjoying the exercise and can hardly believe how much better I feel already. On weight lifting days (today) I lift and do a total of 30 mins on the elliptical with 10 mins on the treadmill (slow) as a cool-down. On Cardio days it's 30 min elliptical and 30 mins treadmill. I don't know that I love this gym, but it certainly has gotten me back in the game and I have a 1 year membership, so it will get the job done! They just went 24 hours, so that certainly eleviates a lot of excuses!

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Your muscles retain water when weightlifting and doing strength type exercises (I learned not to weigh myself at the gym). That, combined with a change in your diet over the weekend (even if you mostly "behaved" during all the social events, you changed things up and confused your body). I find that whenever my body is confused, it automatically goes on the defensive and retains a few pounds and doesn't let them go until a few days after I've been firmly back in my routine. It may even have been a matter of eating at different times than usual that mixed your body up.

I predict a big loss by the end of the week! Oh, and even if you don't lose the water weight right away, I bet you've lost inches from all that exercise. :)

I'm with Jilly. My scale always goes up a few pounds after a weight training session even if I've been perfectly on plan. You'll lose it next week.

What I think is most important is not looking at the scale and judging yourself (which you aren't) or blaming yourself (again you aren't). Our bodies are wonky, funny, unpredictable things and can get thrown off by things like going to the gym and eating different foods ever though you stuck to your calorie limit maybe you ate more carbs than protein or vice versa. So who knows? You are doing so great and not letting yourself get thrown off track when the scale does something silly is really what is going to get you through this.
