Normally I count calories and that's it. But I want to be healthy too, not just thinner. So I am trying to pay attention to partially hydrogenated oil, high fructose corn syrup, grams of sugar and fiber. It's much harder this way. Probably the reason I haven't done it this way before!
I know I can lose weight the other way, but I need/want to be healthier. I want an engine that is running at peak performance. I want energy, stamina. And I know this is the way. I am reading you on a diet and am going to try and adopt his principals. I know it doesn't have to be 100% his way, but I need a guideline to start with. I am going to start to sneak in more vegetables too, like it or not. Actually I going to find a way to like it!
Jen: As far as WLS Surgery, I can't do anything until February (12 months), so I'll make a decision then. Until then I will focus on my own success without surgery.

If you eat whole foods (thereby avoiding HFCS, transfats, chemicals, etc), it makes the counting calories really really easy!!!
That's how I started in July 2004, I was going to concentrate on eating "super foods" (spinach, oranges, walnuts, turkey, soy, tea, beans, tomatoes, broccoli, walnuts, blueberries, pumpkin, yougurt and salmon). Making sure I fit in all these good foods meant I didn't have room for foods that weren't as good.
And...I felt so wonderful, right from the beginning. So much energy. It's been 3.5 years and I still eat this way. During my last doctor's appointment all my numbers were spectacular - the doctor couldn't stop complimenting my cholesterol, triglicerides, blood pressure, sugar, etc.
When I was losing weight, I had changed my focus SLIGHLY to being the healthiest person I could be, I lost 70+ lbs AND used good foods to dramatically improve my health. No more afternoon sleepies for me!
