Coach Carter

Today was supposed to be a normal day at work. I woke up late, so I didn't have time to shower and I forgot to put my makeup on (that has never, ever happened before). My feet have been hurting, so I wore my white gym shoes along with my Navy blue pants. I didn't care, I was just in the office today anyway, no one would see me. Not my prettiest most put together day, I must say.

Then my boss calls and tells me she'd like me to attend a luncheon with her at the country club. *sigh* Sure glad I look great today!! The luncheon's guest speaker was Coach Carter. I didn't know what to expect. I haven't seen the movie, but I imagined he would be motivational. Now even though he is all about sports, it didn't really matter. He had great things to say. I think my favorite quote from today was "never mistake motion for action" by Ernest Hemingway. Boy is that me in a nutshell or what?!?! I am nothing but motion.

He said two other things that are rattling around in my head. One is that all successful people have coaches. Michael Jordon, Tiger Woods - they all have coaches. I have been saying (motion) for a while that I can't do this alone - a.k.a. I need a coach. Someone to help me get to where I need to be. I think a personal trainer would do the trick. The hypnosis would be nice - but I need more than once a month. The medically supervised weight loss would be nice, but still, twice a month, no I need more. I already pay $50.00 a month to belong to the YMCA, so it makes sense to find someone there. They have a 12 week start-fit program that I have attended before. For 12 weeks you work with a trainer and are REQUIRED to work out 3 times a week. At first it's just cardio and then the weights slowly get added in. You meet with the trainer the first time and then in 4 weeks to change your routine, and then again in 4 weeks. A total of 4 times. But she is monitoring your progress because you have to write it all down and she checks the sheets. And the best part...It's only $30.00!!! :) After the 12 weeks, I will see about hiring a trainer to keep me going. ACTION...I just called the trainer that worked with me last time to make sure she is still around, and she is and she is more than happy to work with me again. I will go by the YMCA and fill out and turn in the application for the program today. The trainer that I worked with is a mom turned trainer. I don't really know how great of a trainer she is, but she is someone who will hold me accountable and she is terribly sweet.

The other thing that he said is that all goals have a deadline. I have never been one to give myself a deadline. I have said in passing that I'd like to have this weight off by my 40th birthday, but it's more like a wish than a goal. There are 65 weeks until my 40th birthday. OK, GOAL: To be under 200 lbs on my 40th birthday. I know I need to set some smaller goals, but for now, it's a start.

Do I sound motivated??

Just like taking water aerobics with your mom, I think signing up for the start-fit program is an excellent idea. You seem to do well with that kind of accountability. Feeling obligated and guilty for not following through can be mighty powerful motivators, so I say, use it to your advantage!

How cool about the luncheon with Coach Carter! He sounds like an awesome guy. And I'm sure I can safely say that he never once noticed that you came to hear him speak sans lipstick and wearing your gym shoes. ;D

Excellent! The price is certainly right, having a trainer to push (and keep tabs on) you is perfect and you've chosen a completely "doable" goal. Way to take action!

P.S. - As someone who's seen you without makeup, I can assure you that while you may not have looked as "tiffed" as usual, you most definitely looked great!

P.P.S. - Great Survivor first episode, eh?
